Our 1st Annual Exceptional Rodeo, held on March 8th, 2014 at Sara Park Rodeo Grounds, Lake Havasu City, AZ was a great success

[cincopa AMAAnaLYl5AN]

The mission of the  Exceptional Rodeo was to provide an annual fun filled day of Western / Rodeo activities and entertainment for mentally and/or physically challenged people and their families that they otherwise would not be able to experience. We want to instill in each person a sense of belonging and the belief that they are special each one in their own way.

Our Special People Like You Rodeo Queen Lisa Boody and the Andy Devine Rodeo Queens Mira Singer and Breezy Weber  were available for an autograph session and to get pictures taken.  Despite the wind blowing more than we wished for, the event went very smooth and everybody had fun. Each pre-registered participant and volunteer got an event T-Shirt and a contestant back number as a memento of a great day. We had 11 gentle horses and 1 pony that contestants were able to ride. Everybody was in the Great Entry, whether on a horse or on foot. We had an amazing singer, Debbie Molina, who sang the National Anthem, and we honored the American Soldier with Toby Keith. Thereafter the contestants had the chance to ride a horse in the arena around 3 barrels and through 3 poles, and the same pattern was also set up outside the arena to do it on foot, on stick horse or in a wheelchair. Straw bales with dummy cow heads were there for everyone to practice roping them.

The Leo Club helped out and was available for face painting. Our artist Carol Alf-Rogers had gone out of her way to provide art supplies for contestants to color horses and build horse shapes.

Our raffle sale went exceptionally well, and lots of people went home happy with some awesome prizes that so generously had been donated by local and national businesses and organizations. The 50:50 raffle brought in $ 196.50 and the lucky winner Mat went home with $ 98.25 cash.

Al the volunteers were terrific, without their help this event would not have been possible. We also had the Pet Partners and Happy Feet Adventure Dogs there with several dogs to love on and watch to tricks. The March Dance Studio performed at noon and got the already tired contestants busy dancing. We also had a dog agility performance which everyone greatly enjoyed, and towards the end of the event the Zumba Crew of Lake Havasu together with Desert Star Ballroom Dancers performed some zumba moves to country music.

The event was FREE for everyone thanks to our generous sponsors. Free popcorn and water/coke was provided to all participants and volunteers.

Thank you also to our food vendor Up In Smoke who served delicious pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs to bring energy back to everyone.

Lots of people at the event already asked if there will be a second event. YES, we will definitely hold a 2nd Annual Exceptional Rodeo, and thanks to lots of inputs received it will be even bigger and better. If you want to volunteer, or if you want to be on the Special People Like You Event Committee contact Maria Boody via private message on this website or by phone at 928-208-5842.
